Nanny Bill’s Burger Review

Third burger review in a row on my blog but it’s National Burger Day so it would be rude not too, surely? A few weekends back, Connor and I went to a milkshake and burger festival which was pretty dismal with the exception of Nanny Bill’s.

I’d never heard of Nanny Bill’s previously but they are a street food vendor who travel around and are currently at the pop up – the Last Days of Shoreditch. While I was disappointed that they weren’t serving their mac ‘n’ cheese bites (Instagram research), I ordered anyway. We ordered the bacon cheeseburger sliders and a side of rosemary salted fries. I don’t usually like burger sauce, lettuce or gherkins in my burger but the sliders came with it all and I wasn’t going to deconstruct it in the middle of the festival! The burger was so juicy and succulent and the brioche bun was a perfect match for the patty. If I was being picky then I’d say that it was slightly too juicy as it did leak down my hand but not to extent of my horrible Burger & Lobster experience. I would love to try this slider in it’s full burger size glory. I cannot fault the rosemary salted fries. I love crispy fries and they were all perfectly crisp. I love the infusion of the rosemary!

Bleecker Street Burger Review

The Bleecker Street burger is frequently dubbed as the best burger in London and it’s been on my burger list (yes I have a list) for a while now. Last night I went to Hawker House Street Feast and to my luck, Bleecker have just been released as the new vendor there.

IMG_5010

I was slightly worried that I’d find the Bleecker burger too greasy after having an awful burger experience at Burger & Lobster where I had tidal waves of grease running down my arms… I decided to go for the Bacon Blue burger as the famous Bleecker Black was not on the menu. I watched my fresh patty meet the grill and within a few minutes of assembling it was on a paper plate in front of me. As soon as I saw my single patty, I wished that I’d gone for the double patty, nevertheless I tucked into my burger. I think I had the burger hyped up a lot in my head, don’t get me wrong, it was delicious but I think the double patty would have made a massive difference. The combination of the blue cheese, the streaky bacon and the succulent beef patty was a party of flavours in my mouth but I think they could have been more liberal with the blue cheese! The burger bun was nice and soft but too big for a single patty. I regret not going for the double patty option as the beef was of excellent quality. I plan to go to Spitalfields or to the Bleecker restaurant in Victoria after my rookie error…

Battle Oats Protein Cookies Review

Battle Oats sent me their new cookies to try. I have eagerly been waiting for the cookies to launch after being a fan of the Battle Oats bars.

First things first, I can’t believe how soft these cookies are! They literally crumble into your mouth.

IMG_2769

Double Chocolate Cookie

The cookies is chocolately as expected but does occasionally leave a slight taste of pea protein. This is my favourite out of the two flavours and I think I’ll be purchasing a whole box!

Chocolate Chip Cookie

The pea protein taste was a lot stronger in the chocolate chip cookie and although it was nice, I think the double chocolate flavour is far better!

Battle Oats Cherry Bakewell Review

Battle Oats sent me one of their new cherry bakewell bars to try. I have to admit that I’m not a massive cherry bakewell fan but agreed to try it with my partner in crime, Con who is allergic to nuts. Despite being cherry bakewell, the bar does not contain almonds!

On opening I was slightly worried that the bar looked a bit dry but to my pleasure, the flapjack softly crumbled when I bit into it. I was surprised when I actually really enjoyed the flavour. The cherry and almond were perfectly balanced and the sickly marzipan-like taste which I hate was absent. The bar has chunks of white chocolate and cherry but these were rare to find in the bar – where dem chunks at?!

Summary

I think that the white chocolate coconut Battle Oats is still my favourite but if you like cherry bakewell then give these a try! The macros aren’t the best if you’re focusing purely on protein content but are perfect for a balanced fuel. I just wish that there were more chunks!

Novo Nutrition Proteinos Protein Cereal Review

Optigura sent me two boxes of the Novo Nutrition Proteinos to try. I thought I would review them and let you all know if they are worth the hype!

Texture

I was surprised at how crisp and crunchy the proteinos are. When served with milk, I found the cereal didn’t go soggy as quickly as normal cereal which was a bonus for me!

Taste

The proteinos taste almost identical to normal cereal. I think there is a slight taste of protein in the aftertaste but it wouldn’t stop me from purchasing them in the future.

Chocolate Flavour – I personally think they could have had a stronger taste of chocolate but I enjoyed them nevertheless.

Honey and Vanilla Flavour – I think I preferred this flavour over chocolate as the honey flavour made the milk sweet and delicious.

Conclusion

Overall, I really enjoyed the proteinos and they have definitely satisfied my cereal cravings! The macros are amazing – 16.2g of protein per serving for cereal! I would have given the proteinos a higher rating if they were a more reasonable price as I think that £5.99 is expensive for a box of cereal.

Oatein Brownie, Flapjack and Cookie Review

After being disappointed with my Salted Caramel Cookie, Oatein contacted me and asked if I would be interested in reviewing a sample of their products.

White Chocolate Brownie

When I opened the brownie, I was greeted with a familiar small. It smelt and tasted like white chocolate protein powder which by no means is a bad thing but I did find it a bit overpowering. The texture of the brownie was quite dense but not at all dry. I think the brownie is more of a blondie and I don’t think I’d buy a whole box of these personally.

Cookies ‘n’ Cream Brownie

The cookies ‘n’ cream brownie was quite similar to the white chocolate one in texture. I didn’t think it tasted that much like cookies ‘n’ cream but I preferred it to the white chocolate flavour. Both flavours of brownie tasted incredible when heated in the microwave.

Blueberry and White Chocolate Cookie

So this cookie surprised me. It tastes like a blueberry muffin and has re-ignited the blueberry muffin obsessed I once had. The texture is soft and crumbly like a normal cookie. I would definitely buy a box of these in future – well done Oatein, you got it bang on here!

Strawberry Cheesecake Flapjack

I have become a bit wary of strawberry flavoured protein products after previous reviews. The texture of the flapjack was nice, dense and oaty. The flavour was not too overpowering and I was thankful when I didn’t have a lingering artificial, sickly taste of strawberry in my mouth afterwards. I enjoyed this more than I expected and I would be interested to try the other flapjack flavours as I do prefer chocolate flavours to fruit flavours.

Okay, so Oatein have redeemed themselves after the disappointment of the salted caramel cookie. I really want to try the other flavours now and I have a feeling I may end up ordering…

Oatein products are available from their website here as well as from many other major sport nutrition websites (e.g. CSN, Protein Pick and Mix).

DNAFit Experience

I was contacted and asked if I wanted to try DNAFit. I hadn’t heard of DNAFit previously but they take a sample of your DNA and give you information in relation to fitness and diet based on your genetics. I can imagine some people are thinking ‘why the hell would you do that?’ but your DNA is everywhere – every sip you take from a cup and every hair that falls out of your head.

IMG_0079

Process

I received my DNAFit in the post for my saliva sample. The kit contained a swab for my sample, a consent form and an envelope to return the sample in. I read the instructions several times to ensure that I didn’t do it incorrectly but it was quite simple. You rub the swab on the inside of your mouth for approximately two minutes, put it back in the tub and then post it with the filled in consent form. Unfortunately for me, I received an email after posting informing me that my sample was inadequate which meant that I had to repeat the process. I realise now that the first time I didn’t pressed the swap hard enough when taking the sample.

IMG_0080

Results

DNAFit say that it will taking ten working days for the results to come through once they receive your sample but I think mine were slightly quicker. My results consisted of three reports, a fitness report, a diet report and an infographic of the two combined. This information is based on your DNA results obtained by testing the swab sample ‘for your response to a selection of key genes that are associated with health and fitness’.

Fitness Report

Well, well, it was interesting wasn’t it… I actually found the results quite funny as the first part on the fitness report is your power to endurance response – mine was 27.3% power and 72.7% endurance! Am I supposed to be powerlifting or running marathons?!  The fitness report also gave information with regards to my VO2 max response, recovery speed and risk of injury.

Diet Report

According to the diet report, a Mediterranean diet would be optimal for me as I apparently have a medium sensitivity to carbs and a low sensitivity to saturated fats. The report also detailed other sensitivities as well as the dosages of certain vitamins which would be optimal for me.

Verdict

I found the DNAFit results so interesting to look at and was actually surprised at my power to endurance ratio based on the key genes they compare the sample to. I think that I will take away the vitamin need information and incorporate it into my diet but I do think that some of this information needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. Am I going to give up powerlifting now? No, I enjoy it and I’ve competed at an International level! I think the information could be good for people who are just starting out on their fitness journey as it gives them somewhere to start e.g. perhaps I may have been more likely to try endurance training! Is the DNAFit test accurate? Not a clue as there is still a lot of work being done in genetics.

The tests start at £99 for the diet information , £119 for the fitness information £249 for both. It’s not cheap but it is cutting edge technology and very fascinating. The DNAFit tests can be found on their website here.

Wellthos Box Review

Wellthos kindly sent me one of their subscription boxes to review. I find these subscription boxes can be very hit and miss. Sometimes you can be left with loads of things that you don’t like but Wellthos carefully tailor the box to help ‘inspire you to lead an active and healthy lifestyle’. I received the box at work and it really made my day. The box was presented so neatly and looking at all the goodies instantly lifted my mood.

Pip and Nut Peanut Butter

I was so excited to see my favourite peanut butter in the box.  I have already demolished half of the jar…

p3032772

The Protein Ball Co.

I don’t usually enjoy the taste of cherry and almond together as it’s like cherry bakewell but I really enjoyed the protein balls. I found they were quite addictive…

p3032759

Hippeas Organic Chickpea Puffs

I hadn’t tried these before and didn’t really know what to expect. Oh my goodness, they are amazing! So much flavour and so satisfying to eat!

The Organic Protein Company Organic Whey Protein

I find the sachets of protein are so useful if you’re on the go. I had The Organic Protein Company whey protein in my oats and it had a lovely milky flavour. I would buy this in the future!

p3032758

T+ Drinks Smarter Tea

As a green tea lover, I was happy to see this in the box and I’ve taken it to work to enjoy.

p3032763

POW Energy Water

I hadn’t heard of POW before but the energy water was quite nice. It was overly strong but like a subtle lemonade.

p3032756

Kiki Health Nature’s living Superfood

I would have had no idea how to use this if the Wellthos box didn’t include a recipe card with a superfood powder pesto recipe. For the recipe, you need a food processor which I don’t have so realistically I don’t think I will actually use this – being completely honest! I think the recipe cards are a good idea and it would be good if the box had more of them.

p3032765

Doisy and Dam

The chocolate was very rich. It’s a flavour I wouldn’t have personally bought but it was interesting to try and I think I will use it in recipes.

Zaramama Pop-a-Cob Midnight Blue

I haven’t had my popcorn yet but my sister bought me one of these as a present one Christmas. They’re delicious and it’s actually quite exciting seeing it all pop off the cob!

p3032762

Team Soda Fitness Speed Rope

I like how the box isn’t just food and drink items. I think the speed rope is a cool idea! The box could use another item that isn’t food or drink related to balance it out. I think that this would also help it to stand out from similar products on the market.

p3032764

Overall Verdict

I really enjoyed my Wellthos box. I love how it was all presented – very aesthetically pleasing. My favourite products were the Pip and Nut, Hippeas Organic Chickpea Puffs and the Team Soda Fitness Speed Rope. The box has opened my eyes to products I wouldn’t have bought otherwise, a prime example being the Hippeas! I would be keen to see what products future boxes hold.

Sci-MX PRO2GO Range Review

Sci-MX sent me their new protein 2 go range in return for a review. All views are my own 🙂

Chocolate Brownie

I was a bit disappointed when I opened the brownie as it didn’t look like a nice fudgy brownie. Nevertheless, I tucked in and well, the taste reflected the brownie’s appearance. It wasn’t awful but it wasn’t the brownie I expected. The texture was slightly firmer than I expected and the taste was sweet but not particularly chocolatey. After eating half, I decide to pop the other half in the microwave and well, the brownie improved significantly. The brownie was so much nicer heated for a few seconds in the microwave! I think that if I bought these in the future, I would save them for an occasion where I have access to a microwave.

Strawberry and White Chocolate Chip Cookie

The cookie has a very strong and overpowering taste of strawberry which wasn’t to my liking. I have heard very different options of this cookie – people either loved it or hated it. The texture of the cookie was perfect and not dry like other protein cookies I have tried. I liked the addition of the white chocolate chips but for me, the artificial taste of strawberry was just too prominent and I feel the cookie would have been perfect if this hadn’t been the case.

Cookies and Cream Oat Bake

Just like the cookie, the oat bake again had a very strong flavour of cookie and cream. The texture was firm and quite dense. I again found the oat bake tasted too sweet and artifical for my liking.

Caramel Crisp Bar

This bar was definitely my favourite. Unlike other protein bars, it wasn’t jaw aching to eat. The crispies in the bar gave a satisfying crunch and the ratio of chocolate to caramel was spot on. I would definitely recommend the caramel crisp bar! When heated in the microwave, the chocolate and caramel is simply incredible.

Strawberry Protein Milkshake

I am always a bit apprehensive about these already protein drinks but I really enjoyed the strawberry protein milkshake. It’s not a thick milkshake like you’d get in a burger joint such as Byron but I wouldn’t want it to be as they make me feel sluggish and bloated. The milkshake reminds me of strawberry Nesquik and it is sweet but not too overpowering.

Protein Coffee

I’ve never tried protein coffee before so I was quite interested to try this. It sort of reminded me of the cold double shot Starbucks coffees you can buy from the supermarket which I love. I thought it was slightly too sweet but the macros are amazing and I don’t think the sweetness would put me off trying it again in the future.

Sudio Vasa Bla Bluetooth Earphones Review

Sudio sent me their Vasa Bla Bluetooth earphones in return for an honest review. I chose to receive the white and rose gold model which cost £69. The earphones are available on their website here.

Design

The earphones are light. The rose gold against the white makes them look smart and slick. Sometimes rose gold has a tendency to look tacky and cheap but this was not the case here. The earphones have controls to adjust the volume, start/pause songs and skip songs.

Bluetooth Setup

I have to admit, I didn’t manage to pair the earphones with my phone straight away but once you’ve done it, it’s easy. I was impressed at how clear the instructions were.

Sound Performance

I usually wear my Beats headphones so I was unsure as to how the earphones would compare. To my surprise, they stood up to the battle well and I think the bass may actually be better! I have been wearing my earphones at work as when trying to code as I find it helps me to get into my bubble and removes distractions from people chatting around me. I’m not sure if these earphones are marketed as being noise-cancelling but when my manager ask if I wanted a coffee, he had to come and tap my shoulder!

Verdict

I really enjoyed trying the Sudio earphones and I’m going to continue using them. I love the design and the rose gold colour. The only improvement that I think could be made would be to make the earphones adjustable to make them tighter as this would be useful when in the gym.
